Tongue and Talk of the People: East Midlands – BBC Radio 4, Sunday 20th May 2018 at 4.30pm.

On Sunday, 20th May 2018 at 4.30pm, the second programme in the BBC Radio 4 series, The Tongue and Talk of the People, features the pit-talk and pit poetry of the East Midlands.  Presented by James Walker from Nottingham Trent University and featuring Natalie Braber and David Amos from the Coal and Dialect Project at Nottingham Trent University plus local folk musicians, including the Misk Hills Mountain Rambler III singing ‘Dance of the Miner’ and local pit poets.

Included in the programme is a local dialect version of DH Lawrence’s ‘A Colliers Wife’.  An example of the broad Eastwood dialect can be seen below from ‘Eastwood through Bygones Ages’ by Arthur Coleman (1970).
