Gedling Colliery – A talk by Graham Tavener to the Burton Joyce and Bulcote Local History Society – 13th March 2018 at 7.30pm.
Graham Tavener, former Colliery Electrician and Union Branch Official at Gedling Colliery, will give a talk on the History of Gedling Colliery (1899 – 1991) at the Burton Joyce and Bulcote Local History Society on 13th March 2018 (7.30pm). Gedling was sunk in 1899 /1902 by the Digby Colliery Company from Giltbrook near Eastwood and finished production in November 1991. It was known as The Pit of Nations because of the wide variety of different nationals who ended up working there after World War Two. This is depicted on the Gedling NUM Branch Banner with the slogan “Brothers beneath the Surface”.
